Company Overview
With over 140 faculty members, General Medicine is the largest division within the Department of Internal Medicine. Every member of the General Medicine team strongly supports the mission of Michigan Medicine, delivering excellence in patient care, performing innovative research, and providing up-to-date and comprehensive education and training.
Patient Care
The Division of General Medicine provides general and preventive medicine for adults at the Taubman Health Center, VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System, and eight other clinics located in Ann Arbor, Brighton, Canton, Northville, and Saline. Treating patients in all aspects of their health including arthritis, asthma, diabetes, hypertension, gastroenterological diseases, infectious diseases, and heart disease, and also provided preventive care such as immunizations, health counseling, and sports physicals.
Research
We have one of the most successful research programs of its kind in the country. Our physicians are recognized as leaders in their respective fields and were awarded over $10 million in federal, industry, and foundation grants in the 2017 fiscal year. Additionally, many of our faculty serve in key leadership roles or are researchers at Michigan Medicine’s Center for Health Communications Research, Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation, Center for Bioethics and Social Sciences in Medicine, Cancer Surveillance and Outcomes Research Team, and at the VA Center for Clinical Management Research.
Education and Training
The Division of General Medicine is committed to providing superior and comprehensive education and training to students, residents, and fellows, in the classroom and in our clinics. Our goal is to prepare all students to become outstanding physicians and leaders in their fields. In addition, many of our faculty members help guide medical student education, holding leadership positions at the U-M Medical School, U-M Internal Medicine Residency Program, and U-M Institute for Healthcare Policy & Innovation Clinician Scholars Program.

Department of Internal Medicine
Since its establishment in 1848, the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan has been a leader in the advancement of patient care, education, and research. In 2017, the department continued to receive recognition as a standout in the field ranking #6 among Internal Medicine departments. With more than 800 faculty and 310 residents and fellows distributed over 13 divisions, we are the largest clinical department within the U-M Medical School.
Patient Care
Our department cares for more than half of the patients who come to Michigan Medicine for both primary and specialty care. In 2017, we had over 450,000 outpatient visits and more than 26,000 hospital discharges.
Research
Our collaborative culture, state-of-the-art facilities and breadth of resources, gives our scientists the opportunity to take their leading research from bench to bedside. In 2016, our department was awarded more than $170 million dollars from federal, foundation, and industry sponsors and our faculty produced over 2,600 publications.

Ranked #7 by US News & World Report for internal medicine training, our department has high standards for education. We provide medical students, residents, and fellows a rich learning environment to build a solid foundation of excellence for careers in clinical practice and research.
