Experienced Licensed Veterinary Technician within a large animal medical hospital/practice.
Position Summary
The Large Animal hospital Internal Medicine Licensed Veterinary Technician assists the Internal Medicine service with procedures, performs advanced nursing care for all large animal species, and maintains an organized structure within the Internal Medicine service. Specific duties include (but not limited to) endoscopy, ultrasound, procedures like transtracheal wash, bronchial alveolar lavage, advanced nursing care for neonates, and advanced nursing care for medically intensive disease processes. This position will provide all general medical care for Large Animal patients, including : Collection of blood, urine by expression, cystocentesis or catheterization; collection and preparation of tissue, cellular, or microbiological samples by skin scraping, impressions; routine laboratory test procedures; radiology including settings, positioning, processing, and safety; intravenous and arterial catheterization; administration and application of treatments, drugs, fluids, medications and immunological agents by oral, parenteral and injectable routes; induction and maintenance of anesthesia; placement of intra-nasal, intra-gastric tubes; dental procedures; euthanasia; surgical assistance; resuscitative procedures; applications of splints and slings; application of appropriate wound dressings and external supportive care in severe wound and burn cases.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and/or Competencies
- Maintain license as Veterinary technician in the state of Georgia
- Interact and effectively communicate with diverse personnel and display excellent interpersonal skills.
- Work in a fast paced environment.
- Exhibit attention to detail.
- Understand advanced medical terminology.
- Lift and carry up to 75 pounds.
- May sit, stand, stoop, bend and walk intermittently during the day on hard floor surfaces.
- Dealing with stressful situations involving large animals.
- Manual dexterity sufficient to accurately work with small, delicate pieces of equipment or large heavy objects/containers/machinery.
- Wearing all protective gear including mask, gloves, gown, hairnet, safety goggles etc.
- Work for long periods of time with arms extended.
- Work within an environment that has high levels of animal sounds, bodily fluids that need disposal, and open wound management.
- operate medical equipment and drive hospital vehicles to local farms and campus facilities when needed.
